How does a Raleigh family apply for free pre-K in Wake County?
A Wake County family fills out one Wake Pre-K application, and the child is matched with NC Pre-K, WCPSS Title I Pre-K or Telamon Head Start, whichever fits the family best. Paper applications go to the Wake County Smart Start Application Center at 4901 Waters Edge Drive in Raleigh.
The most recent WCPSS page we found described the 2025-26 cycle, with a June 13, 2025 deadline, so check the 2026-27 or 2027-28 date before you rely on it.
Who qualifies for Wake's free pre-K programs?
The child must live in Wake County and turn four by August 31. Title I Pre-K screens children each spring, NC Pre-K is aimed mainly at households earning up to three-quarters of the state median, and Head Start follows its own federal rules.
WCPSS also lists tuition-based classrooms, such as Project Enlightenment and two magnet elementary programs, that are separate from the free application.
Can a private preschool in Wake County host NC Pre-K?
Yes, if it is a four- or five-star licensed child care center under contract with the county's NC Pre-K program. Ask a private or church preschool director directly whether one of their rooms is an NC Pre-K classroom.
